The house infrastructure is monitored 24/7 by the ManageEngine Opmanager Suite which polls and records the status of the Servers, key Network Devices and Links (including wireless) and Network Media Devices and Printers via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). Exceptions, faults and warnings are reported audibly in the Kitchen and are sent to a central Operations E-mail mailbox. The results of the suite of maintenance and back-up jobs which run each Monday on the Servers and Workstations is also sent to this mailbox.
Monitoring is comprehensive but includes:
Device Availability and LAN / WAN response times.
Network Link speed, availability and traffic statistics.
Server performance - CPU, Memory and Disk usage.
Asset and Inventory Management
Central management of all installed software and running processes.
Windows Event Log and Services monitoring.
Application Services availability and response times (e.g. failure or problems with the TV, CCTV, Media or Automation services etc).
DNS Server, NAT, MulitiNAT, DNS name resolution and TCP/IP issues.
URL (Webserver and external Website) availability and response times.
The system gives fast "early warning" of network issues and Operating System and Application problems usually before they have a critical impact and also allows easy access to the data required for system reconfiguration, tuning and load-balancing.
In the event of a problem being reported, the eight servers can be remotely accessed and managed via Windows RDC. The key network devices including routers, switches, print servers, wireless access points and bridges can each be logged-on to and remotely managed via their own webserver (see the 12 management webservers listed in the menu on the left).
In the event of a server crash or network device "lock-up", key devices can even be remotely "power-cycled" and rebooted using the house automation control system which is independent of the Ethernet infrastructure.
